I love you all. I really do. Subsequent to my departure posting I received so many depressed, shocked, and saddened emails that I have decided to revise my retirement plans. It is not for lack of love of topping that I wanted to move on, it is because there are so many creative projects that I would like to get off the ground that there is not enough time in the day to focus on everything.

Japan Crisis Puts Things in Perspective

I am sure there is not a single person out there who is not horrified by the flood of pictures and stories emerging from Japan right now. Perhaps you know people who were affected, who died, or have simply been wondering what you would do if such devastation happened here. In Canada. In Toronto. To you and your loved ones.

While one could say that natural disasters are just something the earth "does" and are not reflective of the way in which we treat Her, I invite you to suspend your disbelief for a moment and view them as a communication from the Headmistress.

Perhaps Her Majesty Goddess Earth is shaking us from our complacency and our sleepwalking. Waking us up to the reality that we are all connected on this relatively tiny little planet. Sexual Fantasy and Maslow's Hierarchy

First of all, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your "bucket lists", those of you who sent me yours...some admirable pursuits and some uncanny similarities to my list. Get your butts in here for a session :)

Joking aside, it has led me to wondering how many people actually make the fulfillment of their sexual fantasies a priority at some point in their lives. On Maslow's hierarchy of needs, self-actualization and the realization of all inner potentials is at the top of the triangle, only to be accessed once basic survival, emotional, and psychological needs are met.

Although one could consider sex to be lower on the totem pole, with physical or emotional needs, I would put the conscious exploration of one's deepest sexual fantasies up there with self-actualization, because it involves having the introspection to be aware of, and the impetus and resources to realize deep desires that are not necessarily fully conscious.

Which has led me to the realization that to explore and seek to understand our deep sexual impulses is a privilege that I, at least, am grateful to be able to investigate. It is a rich playground and a source of much fulfillment and satisfaction.

In the context of Maslow, it is not something that everyone, due to their life's circumstances, may be able to focus on...but I pray that at some point in a lifetime, even if just once, every person gets a taste of the uniqueness of their particular sexual makeup and knows, if just for a moment, just how empowering and beautiful it is.

A Kink in the Relationship - Upcoming Workshop

It can be a sad thing when we want to but cannot share our kinks or bdsm desires with our partners for fear that they will respond in a negative way. It is even harder to risk sharing our fantasies when more than just our relationship is riding on the line...a house, kids, a shared dream.

Mostly, in these cases, we just want our partners to accept us for who we are, to love us with all our eccentric predilections. I have recently been promoted to Directing Manager of Santa's Naughty List.

The Importance of Letting Yourself Be

Some recent sessions have me wanting to write something for all those of who struggle with feelings of shame and guilt about their particular fetishes and fantasies.

Any time there is a part of ourselves that we don't like, or that we are afraid our loved ones won't like, we separate from it and stuff it into the unconscious parts of our psyches, telling ourselves that if we just ignore it, maybe it will go away. We may blame ourselves for being "different" from the sexual "norm", or pretend that our interests are more socially acceptable.

But from my heart to yours, I can tell you that as long as you are denying that those parts of yourself exist, you will not know the deep self-acceptance and self-love that comes from letting every part of you have a voice and be seen...those parts which you or others perceive to be acceptable AND those parts which you or others don't.

Sexuality runs deeps to the very core of who we are, and often our strongest sexual associations are established as we are exploring our worlds as children, before we even have a language to speak about them. When I say this I am not implying abuse, but rather am speaking about the natural energy and attraction that young children have for what is in their worlds. They engage with the world in a sensual way, tasting, touching, smelling, hearing, seeing...and inwardly processing those feelings.

Therefore an equation between a particular thing and "feeling good" gets set up, and as we grow up we continue to seek out that which we associate with "feeling good".

That is nobody's fault, and it is neither good or bad, it just is. The problem is that we then grow up into a society that promotes the myth that there is one normal way to get turned-on and engage sexually. So we begin to compare our fantasies with the figurative "guy next door", and judge ourselves as weird or perverted.

BUT THE MYTH THAT THERE IS A SEXUAL "NORMAL" TO WHICH WE SHOULD ALL BE ASPIRING IS JUST THAT - A MYTH!!!

The truth of human sexuality is that the only norm is sexual variation - that is, there are as many different ways of expressing sexuality as there are people in this world.

So whatever your particular flavour, let yourself be. You are perfect exactly as you are.

Several entries ago I did a piece on sensual BDSM that really resonated with many of you. While surfing the web today I found the following, which expands on the variety of categories of "submissives" that exist, and may help you to ascertain your own predilections and desires with more accuracy.

From my personal perspective as a domme, none of these is better or any more "ideal" as a client than any other - but knowing what your stance is can help in your communication of your desires to Me and will ensure a more satisfying session for both of us:

"Within the S/M subculture, different people use the words "submissive and slave" to mean many different things. When submissives say "I want to be your slave," sometimes they mean only that they want to be tied up and whipped. Many professional dominants routinely refer to their (usually _not_ very genuinely submissive clients) as "slaves." At the other extreme, there are people who want to be full-time personal servants, and who truly want to exist solely for their Dom(me)'s use, pleasure and convenience. And there are many shades in between these two extremes.

1. THE OUTRIGHT NON-SUBMISSIVE MASOCHIST or KINKY SENSUALIST. Not into servitude, humiliation or giving up control; just pain and/or spiced-up sensuality, on the masochist's own terms and for the masochist's own direct pleasure (i.e. turned on solely/mainly by one's own bodily sensatons rather than by being "used" to gratify one's partner's sadism).

2. PSEUDO-SUBMISSIVE NON-SLAVE. Not into even playing "slave," but into other "submissive" role-playing, e.g. schoolteacher scenes, infantilism, "forced" transvestism. Usually into humiliation, but NOT into servitude, even in play. Dictates the scene to a large degree.

3. PSEUDO-SUBMISSIVE PLAY SLAVE. Likes to play at being a slave; likes to feel subservient; may in some cases like to feel one is being "used" to gratify partner's sadism; may even really serve the dominant in some ways, but only on the "slave's" own terms. Dictates the scene to a large degree; often fetishistic (e.g. foot worshippers).

4. TRUE SUBMISSIVE NON-SLAVE. Really gives up control (only temporarily and within agreed-upon limits), but gets her/his main satisfaction from aspects of submission other than serving or being used by the dominant. Usually turned on by suspense, vulnerability, and/or giving up responsbility. Doesn't dictate the scene except in very general terms, but still seek mainly her/his own direct/pleasure (rather than getting one's pleasure mainly from pleasing the dominant).

5. TRUE SUBMISSIVE PLAY SLAVE. Really gives up control (though only temporarily; only during brief "scenes" and within limits) and gets main satisfaction from serving/being used by dominant-but only for FUN purposes, usually erotic. May/may not be into pain. If so, is turned on by pain indirectly, i.e. enjoys being the object of one's partner's sadism, on which the submissive places very few requirements or restrictions.

6. UNCOMMITTED SHORT-TERM BUT MORE THAN PLAY SEMI-SLAVE. Really gives up control (usually within limits); wants to serve and be used by the dominant; wants to provide practical/non erotic as well as fun/erotic services; but only when the "slave" is in the mood. May even act as a full-time slave for, say, several days at a time, but is free to quit at any time (or at the end of the agreed upon several days). May or may not have long-term relationship with one's Mistress, but, either way, the "slave" has the final say over when she will serve.

7. PART-TIME CONSENSUAL-BUT REAL SLAVE. Has an ongoing commitment to an owner/slave relationship and regards oneself as the dominant's property at all times. Wants to obey and please dom(me) in all aspects of life-practical/non erotic and fun/erotic. Devotes most of time to other commitments (e.g. job) but Dom(me) has first pick of the slave's free time.

8. FULL-TIME LIVE IN CONSENSUAL SLAVE. Within no more than a few broad limits/requirements, the slave regards herself/himself as existing solely for the Dom(me)'s pleasure/well being. Slave in turn expects to be regarded as a prized possession. Not much different from the situation of the traditional housewife, except that within the S/M world the slave's position is more likely to be fully consensual, especially of the slave is male. Within the S/M world, a full time "slave" arrangement is entered into with an explicit awareness of the magnitude carefully, with more awareness of the magnitude of power that is being given up, and hence is usually entered into much more carefully, with more awareness of the possible dangers, and with much clearer and more specific agreements than usually precede the traditional marriage.

9. CONSENSUAL TOTAL SLAVE WITH NO LIMITS. A common fantasy ideal which probably doesn't exist in real life (except in authoritarian religious cults and other situations where the "consent" is induced by brainwashing and/or social or economic pressures, and hence isn't fully consensual). A few S/M purists will insist that you aren't really a slave unless you're willing to do absolutely anything for your Dom(me), with no limits at all. I've met a few people who claimed to be no-limit slaves, but in all cases I have reason to doubt the claim."

Out of the goodness of my heart, I have decided to share some travel highlights that I thought might be of interest to various subgroups in my constituency.

Can you relate to this statement? Seems most people who contact Me can - about 75% of new queries that I've received in the last three months contained a variation of this statement, enough to make the social scientist in Me go "Hmmm".

There seems to be a popular misconception out there that Dominas are always sadists (people who get off inflicting pain on others) and that submissives are ALWAYS masochists (people who get off on experiencing pain). This myth is so pervasive that it makes potential submissives doubt themselves and their desires (ie. If they don't like being hurt, then can they still be a good or useful submissive...?)

The answer to that question is: Of course they can!

The term BDSM has a triple meaning: Bondage and Discipline (B/D), Domination and Submission (D/S), and Sadism and Masochism (S/M). Though S/M is only a third of what kinky play encompasses, it gets focused on by popular media because the experience of pain as sexual pleasure is controversial and can be easily sensationalized.

What happens is that the more sensual forms of playing with power, those that focus on administering sensual control or being sensually controlled, get swept under the rug. Things like bondage and restraint, foot/boot/shoe worship, slave training, strap-on play, orgasm restriction, coerced self-stimulation, role play, tease and denial, forced feminization, and sensory deprivation (to name a few) do not necessary involve pain and yet I can promise that you will feel deliciously controlled and overpowered by Me when experiencing them.

If S/M genuinely is your kink, then enjoy it! If it isn't, though, don't second guess your submissive urges. Not everyone is a painslut. As Rumi says, there are a hundred ways to kneel and kiss the ground.

Mindfuck 101: Introduction

Anyone can learn the mechanics of BDSM: How to tie a knot, aim a whip, or wield a strap-on. However, as even I can attest from some of my early experiences, a rope, a whip, and a strap-on do not a kick-ass session make. Think back for a moment to some BDSM scenes you have experienced - what made some of them mind blowing, and some of them fall flat?

If I were to really press you, I suspect that you would ultimately conclude that you had the best time when you felt that a Domme really "got into your head", was able to control you psychologically as well as physically, knew your emotional hot buttons and pushed them...or something similar.

A question I get asked frequently by new Dommes and Tops falls along these lines. They are comfortable swinging a flogger and locking the handcuffs, but wish that they knew how to better connect with their submissives and achieve the psychological control that underlies the synergy and dynamic flow of a scene. In other words: "I tied him up, now how to I make him sweat??"

Over the next few weeks I will begin to write about some of the methods that I use in my sessions with clients so that you can try them at home (though admittedly, completing a psychology degree and starting to pay a lot more attention to your intuition are excellent starting points!)

Too hot for latex!

So yesterday I pulled on my favourite pair of black leather boots and wandered on down to Church St., site of the Sixth Annual Church Street Fetish Fair: a Folsom Fair North, if you will.

I often get asked the same questions over and over by people inquiring about these services, and so am reprinting them here for anyone who is potentially interested:

Who are these services for?

Men, women, couples, transpeople, sex workers of all sexual orientations or predilections...Anyone who wants to delve deeper into self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-development in the arena of their sexuality and/or sexual identity.

How many sessions do I see you for?

Our sexual natures are complex and multifaceted. We did not become the way we are overnight, so one cannot expect that whatever it is you are trying to work through will get resolved in one session. The actual number of sessions vary depending on the person and the desired goals, but I would say that a minimum of three sessions is generally necessary to begin to gain some insight and perspective.

What would we talk about?

The "issues" that we talk about in session are client-defined. What that means is that I am not going to diagnose you or label you or tell you what I think your problem is. Those who access My services generally have a good idea of what they want to explore and why, and so that becomes the starting point for the work. Just a few of the past issues that I have been approached with:

Seeking understanding of personal fetishes, fantasies, or desires that seem to differ from the "norm"
Acceptance of sexual or gender orientation
Exploring personal motivations for engaging or not engaging sexually
Difficulties with orgasm
Desire incompatibilities in relationships
Patterns of sexual engagement that no longer work and need changing
Sexual communication skills

What would a session consist of?

Sessions may include goal setting, discussion, narrative therapy (a form of therapy that bases itself on the stories people tell about themselves and their worlds), and role playing or other experiential exercises to help you gain insight into yourself. And sexuality is a vital and essential part of what makes us human!

I encourage all of you to take some time to reflect on how authentically you are giving expression to your sexual truths, whatever those might be. Have the courage to take a measure of how much space you allow them, and then be brave enough to give them a bit more breathing room.
They are embodiments of your most essential self, and that self deserves to live.

Let’s get the following straight so that we can begin on the same page without miscommunication:

What receptivity is NOT:

-Coming into a scene thinking that you already know everything there is to know about being a submissive.
-Topping from the bottom.
-Trying to guess what Mistress wants before she makes a request or gives a command.
-Attempting or suggesting reciprocation for pleasure or sensation given.

Is any of that surprising?

I ask because men do not necessarily spend a lot of time being receptive. Their natural tendency based on societal conditioning is to DO things and then think about them after (maybe). Receptivity is a learned state for men, not because they do not have it within their make-up, but because men are not particularly encouraged to develop that part of themselves while growing up.

Perhaps you have one or two favourites from this list despite the fact that as a submissive you are meant to be receptive to orders, sensation, stimulation, prompting, etc.?

I have observed that many men tend to engage in one or more of the behaviours above, though perhaps not entirely consciously. They are covert ways of being active while under the guise of the submissive role. You will not experience the full pleasure of receptivity until you abandon these by the wayside.

So then what does it mean to be receptive?

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines receptivity as “…able or inclined to receive; open and responsive to ideas, impressions, or suggestions.”

If your arms are already carrying lots of boxes, how can you reach out to receive the gift that someone is offering you?
If your glass is already full, how can you sample a different wine?
If you think you already know what is going to happen, how can you be present to what actually does?

The key to receptivity is the state of emptiness. It is only when you are empty of all pre-conceived notions and ideas that you can hope to have room to take in new information or experience. When you step into scene play, start disciplining yourself by making the choice to be receptive to whatever Mistress weaves into your reality in the moment. Taste, touch, smell, and see it for the first time, as though travelling through a new landscape that you have never before explored, no matter how many times you have traversed similar terrain. Re-remember the wonder you had as a child, and apply it!

I admit it. Sometimes I feel like a skydiving instructor. People contact Me saying "I've always wanted to try this but I'm terrified..." So I give them the lay of the land, assure them of safety procedures, and answer all their questions, until the only thing left is for them to show up. They board the plane, I take it up to 4000 feet.... and at the threshold, few and far between are the students who don't need an extra kick in the pants when I yell "JUMP". In fact, most need their fingers pried ruthlessly off the frame of the door having just decided that maybe, actually, they don't want to experience freefall after all and whose silly idea was this anyway?!

This is absolutely normal. And it has to do with your ability (or inability) to let go of control. Take the inability to let go one step further, and we discover what is really behind this seeming irrationality: fear of the unknown.

We are passionately attracted to the unknown, and yet it is one of the most terrifying places for us to be. Based on My studies in human potential and My own experience, I have learned that a possible reason for this phenomenon is as follows: Human beings, consciously or unconsciously, seek out growth experiences. However, when one grow, one becomes someone different than who one was before, which entails a loss of identity. Our egos, creatures of habit that they are, would prefer not to have this loss occur, but it is inevitable. A butterfly is no longer a caterpillar when it escapes its cucoon, and a newly collared slave is no longer free to do as he pleases vis a vis his Mistress. The new state is a rebirth of the self into something new: no more, and no less important than what came before.

What on earth could possibly be good about deprivation and denial, and the discipline that gets learned as a result? If there are three words that inspire absolute repulsion in people it is those three. We live in an addictive society that is all about instant gratification. Press a button, and your groceries end up on your doorstep. Turn on your computer, and you can pick up women without leaving your bedroom. If we have to wait more than five minutes for something we say that it takes too long. It is as though we are contending with a societal pandemic of attention deficit disorder.
One could say that this is a good thing, an indication that we are evolving...but is it? Do we get the same kind of satisfaction from a microwave dinner as we would if we had grown the food ourselves, painstakingly prepared it and carefully cooked it? The former is certainly quicker than the latter. But it is the former that we are more likely to stuff down quickly in front of a television set. Satisfying? Not particularly!
It is the same in a BDSM session, particularly for those who are new to the game. One can look at the deprivation and denial in a session and be frustrated because what one perceives to be one's needs, whatever they are, are not being immediately addressed. Alternately, one can surrender to the deprivation in whatever form it takes, sublimating one's baser instincts for something much more inherently satisfying and fulfilling. This takes quite a lot of discipline and self-control,
but the benefits are significant. According to Tantric belief systems, the occasional circulation within the body of the energy of arousal without reaching a peak, or by taking a longer than usual time to peak, promotes health and vitalizes the organs. It cultivates discipline, which builds the integrity of one's character, teaches patience, and gives a person a sense of accomplishment. Lastly, the next time a "meal" does appear on your plate, ready for consumption, one will be able to slow down and consciously savour the precious gift of it with the satisfaction of knowing that one earned it!
